At Euler, whilst some children may be confident readers, many struggle to make connections, transfer their knowledge, lack awareness of words and apply spelling patterns into their writing.
Pupils at Euler have a discrete weekly spelling lesson, which is appropriate to their stage of development and existing knowledge of spelling. There are additional opportunities for the practice and application of spelling in different contexts throughout the week.
Pupils will start each day with their bespoke spellings (stage of learning) in basic skills and will be tested on every Friday. Spellings are sent home to support their practise of the weekly words.
Every Monday, as part of the English writing 2-week cycle, pupils begin with a spelling lesson (I can spell) which focusses on the spelling rule, adult modelling, dictation and application in context.
Pupil accessing the phonics pathway follow Bug Club’s long-term plan and learning is linked to their phase and unit.
Termly formative assessments are used monitor progress in knowledge of the common expectation words. This will inform the personalisation of the spellings that the pupil is exposed to in their weekly spelling lesson. Teachers follow the long-term plan and select words to spell based on their stage of learning.
Some children may need additional support to be made such as phoneme frames, fewer word to avoid cognitive overload, practical activities and interactive games.
