At Euler, we recognise some of our pupils can have a significant barrier to handwriting and for this reason we place a high priority on developing a simple, flowing pre-cursive handwriting style and recognise some pupils may have additional interventions to focus on motor control (Teodorescu Perceptuo-Motor Programme).
In our discrete handwriting 12-week cycle, pupils focus on the four letter teams: ‘L’ team (l,i,u,t,y,g), ‘C’ team (c,a,d,g,q,o,e,s,f), ‘R’ team (r,n,m,h,b,k,p), and the ‘zig zag’ team (v,w,z,x).
We focus on the three S’s: shape, size, and sitting on the line.
Pupils are taught formation and joins in letter teams (noted above), through over learning, modelled and practiced sessions. Teachers adapt and personalise the content of the lesson based on the stage of the learner: pre-joined, joined, and fluent.
We recognise neat and legible handwriting is an essential tool to enable writing to be read and understood by the reader and place emphasis on children experiencing success in this.
We teach a 15-minute lesson daily after lunchtime. The structure of the lesson will be as follows.
• Warm-up (fine motor skills)
• Explicit teaching
• Practice
Adaptations
Some children may need additional support through adapted resources such as pencil grips, triangular pencils, wider lines, technology, writing slopes and tinted exercise books.
